Community Rehabilitation Assistant

Position Summary
Under the clinical direction of the Physiotherapist or Occupational Therapist, the Community Rehabilitation Assistant functions as a member of the multidisciplinary team in meeting the needs of the client. The Community Rehabilitation Assistant carries out rehabilitative treatment plans and programs, and assists the Therapist in monitoring and evaluating client’s progression. The Community Rehabilitation Assistant assists clients with activities of daily living, and implements group and individual programs in clients’ homes and other community sites.

We are seeking to build our Community Rehabilitation Assistant Casual pool at Nelson Health Centre. Days of work are rotating (08:00 to 16:00 hours). Travel is involved in this role in order to provide rehab therapy services to clients in their homes. A valid Driver’s License is necessary. Access to a personal vehicle is required.

Some Typical Duties and Responsibilities:
• Carries out individual and group rehabilitation treatment plans and/or programs as directed by a Therapist such as: exercise, walking, cognitive/ perceptual activities, power mobility training, Range of Motion (ROM), hot or cold packs, Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS), self care activities, and life skills under the direction of a Therapist.
• Promotes and teaches basic life skills such as: self care, home and personal management skills, under the direction of the Therapist.
• Contributes to the overall evaluation of the client identifying and reporting verbally or in writing observable factors which might impact the client’s therapeutic program and progress.
• Receives client feedback, inquiries, and complaints, and responds as required.
• Provides input into the planning, implementation, modification and evaluation of the rehabilitative treatment plan and/or program.

Education, Training and Experience:
• Graduate of a recognized, two-year Rehabilitation Assistant Diploma Program.
• Current valid BC Driver’s License.

Skills and Abilities:
Ability to communicate verbally and in writing, and to understand written and verbal instructions.
• Ability to work independently and with other members of the health care team, clients and their families.
• Ability to establish and maintain rapport with clients.
• Ability to perform tasks delegated by a Physiotherapist or Occupational Therapist or tasks within established programs that encourage client independence, optimize function and improve quality of life.
• Ability to observe and recognize changes in clients.
• Ability to instruct.
• Home management skills.
• Knowledge of psychosocial rehabilitation principles.
• Ability to organize and prioritize work.
• Ability to operate related equipment including software applications.
• Physical ability to perform the duties of the position including walking, stooping, bending, transferring clients.
