Intake counsellor

Portage - Siège Social

This is a Contract position in Montreal, QC posted June 5, 2020.

Under the supervision of the Admissions Coordinator, the Intake manages all activities related to data collection, service requests and admissions to the centre.


  • Ensures that all of the organization’s policies and procedures are followed and prioritizes the quality of care provided, as well as the safety and well-being of residents, in all tasks performed, actions taken and documents prepared.
  • Ensures that the quality of care provided is adequate and complies with the organization’s existing policies and procedures.
  • Ensures that all tasks and actions performed focus on the safety and well-being of residents.
  • Welcomes candidates and evaluates requests, motivations and criteria;
  • Fills out the program’s eligibility questionnaire for external candidates or those from the penal environment;
  • Updates the database with all relevant information regarding the candidate;
  • When a candidate starts the day centre program or prior to a candidate’s admission:
    • Photocopies relevant IDs for the candidate’s file at the day centre;
    • Checks whether the candidate has read all of the documents needed for admission, such as court documents and conditions, court dates and medical appointments;
    • Mails or faxes all disclosure consent forms that enable Portage to receive medical or psychiatric files, or any other relevant file for the case conference;
    • As needed, communicates with contacts (e.g.: S.W., lawyer, employer, nurse, etc.) for the resident’s file;
    • Presents the candidate’s file to the clinical educators.
  • During the candidate’s stay at the day centre, does a follow-up with users regarding steps they must take, discusses their progress and checks whether everything is unfolding as it should;
  • Every Wednesday, fills out the Portage Acquired Skills Scale (PASS) for new arrivals;
  • From time to time, leads group discussions and replaces at the information desk;
  • Makes follow-up phone calls to accepted candidates who did not show up;
  • Compiles admissions statistics on a monthly basis and presents them at team meetings;
  • Organizes and coordinates motivational counselling sessions (number of sessions will depend on the level of motivation and the complexity of file);
  • Prepares and present case presentations;
  • Prepares the first plan of care for orientation period;
  • Performs any other related duties at the request of his or her supervisor.


  • Hold a certificate in substance abuse treatment (a major asset);
  • 3 years of relevant experience in a similar position
  • Demonstrated ability in the art of oral and written communication;
  • Training or workshops on mental health issues, medication, methadone, CPR, and suicide prevention would be an asset;
  • Good knowledge of French and English (spoken and written);
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel);
  • Ability to negotiate and persuade;
  • Autonomy and good organizational skills;
  • Initiative;
  • Excellent analysis and evaluation abilities;
  • Ability to work under pressure;
  • All other relevant experience or educational levels will be considered.

Other information

Permanent position, full time 37.5 hours per week
Schedule: from monday to friday, day shift
Contract 24 months


Salary: 17.37-25.00
