Registered Practical Nurse

Hamilton Health Sciences

This is a Contract position in Hamilton, ON posted July 16, 2022.

The Integrated Stroke Program at HHS falls under two governing programs, the Neurosciences and the Rehabilitation Program. This RPN position will be 24 acute stroke beds as well as Neurology beds. Staff will have or be expected to develop skills in caring for stroke and Neurology patients in the acute phase. The unique model provides opportunities for enhanced continuity of patient care through clustering of Stroke and Neurology patients into specialized clusters with dynamic and strong interdisciplinary teams.

The Registered Practical Nurse works as part of a multi-disciplinary team that uses a client centered approach to patient care and provides nursing care within the Registered Practical Nurse scope of practice. The RPN supports the specialized day-to-day needs of patients who have experiences stroke and/or Neurological illness through provision of care in the acute phase of the care continuum

1. Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Practical Nurse.
2. Current Medication Administration and Asepsis certificates
3. Current certificates or current Community College studies in asepsis, wound care, airway management, complex wound care, patient assessment, urinary catheterization, administering enteral feeds, IV administration, venipuncture, and management, transcribing physician orders
4. Current Heart and Stroke Foundation BCLS certification or equivalent
5. Completion of Physical Assessment Course
6. Minimum 2 years, recent experience in an acute adult medical/surgical unit, preferably with Stroke/Neurology patients
7. Demonstrated ability to work in a fast paced, high turnover environment
8. Demonstrates strong interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills
9. Demonstrates critical thinking and decision making in assessment, problem identification and problem solving
10. Ability to prioritize and collaborate with the team when the patients conditions changes
11. Evidence of commitment to professional practice and ongoing professional development
